Hanging Rock

If you’re up for a bit of adventure and want to explore the stunning scenery of the Blue Mountains, then you have to check out the Burramoko Ridge (Hanging Rock) trail. This hike is located in the Blackheath region and it will offer you breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and gorge views along the trail. It’s definitely going to be an unforgettable experience!

The Burramoko Ridge (Hanging Rock) trail is an 11.1-kilometer trek (Out & Back) and it usually takes about 3 hours to complete. The trail starts from the Baltzer Lookout car park at the end of the Ridgewell road and follows the Burramoko Fire Trail. I went on this adventure early in the morning and the misty atmosphere made it all feel like a dream.

Keep in mind that this trail is shared with trail runners and cyclists, so be aware of your surroundings.

Although the trail is well-marked, it can be rocky and steep at times. So, it’s important to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support. Also, make sure to bring enough water and snacks to keep you energized throughout the hike. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast before you start, as the conditions can change quickly in the Blue Mountains.

You can also follow the AllTrail maps to make sure you’re on the right track.

The hike to Baltzer Lookout may feel a bit long, but once you get there, the views of the Grose Valley from the cliff’s edge are absolutely stunning.

To get a clear view of Hanging Rock, you need to follow an unmaintained bush track downhill from Baltzer Lookout for 250m. The track can be a bit steep in parts, but it’s not too difficult to navigate. Just be careful, especially if it’s wet and slippery.

When you get to the clear viewpoint, you’ll have an amazing spot for taking photos. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try to make your way out to the rock itself, but be warned, it can be a bit scary! You have to step from one cliff face to another, and there’s nothing between you and the valley floor 300 meters below! So, if you’re not comfortable with it, it’s best to skip it altogether.

Assuming you make it across safely, you’ll only need to walk uphill on a dirt path for a few meters before you reach the edge of the rock. This part is extremely exposed, so be careful and avoid the edges if possible.

Once you’re done taking in the view from Hanging Rock, you can continue along the trail to explore more of the surrounding area. Alternatively, you can retrace your steps and head back up to Baltzer Lookout.

Before you set out on this hike, make sure you’re prepared. Bring a map of the area and a charged phone in case of an emergency. Apply lots of sunscreen, as it’s a pretty exposed trail. And most importantly, remember to respect the natural environment by packing out all your rubbish.
